Project Base Camp field guide

Build something useful.
Reach the summit ready.

This guide turns the Bootcamp’s project advice into a practical route from first idea to final presentation. Start small, create momentum and ask for help before you get stuck.

Start preparing
01

Useful beats enormous.

The strongest project is not the biggest. It solves a real problem, helps a real person or proves a valuable possibility.

02

Momentum beats perfection.

Build the minimum piece that teaches you something. Action creates momentum; momentum makes the practical version possible.

03

Human judgement stays in charge.

Verify outputs, protect privacy, get consent and decide what responsible quality means for your project.

Seven stages

Your route from idea to demonstration.

Complete each field task and mark the milestone to earn 75 XP.

01
FIELD OUTCOME

Choose something worth solving

A real problem or opportunity that matters to you and creates value for someone else.

  • What repeatedly wastes time, creates friction or limits someone?
  • What opportunity becomes possible because AI can now see, hear, write, reason or build?
  • Why do you care enough to keep working when the first version is imperfect?
DO THISWrite one sentence: I want to help [person] to [outcome] because [reason].
02
FIELD OUTCOME

Name the human at the centre

A specific user, audience or stakeholder whose needs guide the project.

  • Who will actually use, experience or benefit from this?
  • What do they already know, fear or find difficult?
  • What would useful look like from their point of view?
DO THISDescribe one real person or group and the moment when they would use your project.
03
FIELD OUTCOME

Map Minimum, Dream and Practical

A motivating vision with a finishable scope.

  • Minimum: what is the smallest thing that proves the idea?
  • Dream: what could this become with unlimited time and capability?
  • Practical: what can you complete well with the time and tools available?
DO THISChoose the Practical version as your expedition target; keep Minimum as your rescue route.
04
FIELD OUTCOME

Pack only what you need

A focused set of source material, examples, tools and boundaries.

  • Which course tools best fit the job instead of simply feeling exciting?
  • What examples show the quality, voice or behaviour you want?
  • Do you have permission to use every file, image, voice and piece of personal information?
DO THISCreate a small input pack and remove anything you do not need.
05
FIELD OUTCOME

Build the smallest useful slice

Something another person can see, try or react to.

  • What is the central experience or output?
  • Can you demonstrate value before automating everything?
  • What can you build today to create momentum?
DO THISMake one end-to-end path work, even if parts are still manual.
06
FIELD OUTCOME

Test, verify and improve

Evidence that the project is accurate, useful, responsible and understandable.

  • What did AI invent, misunderstand or oversimplify?
  • Can the intended person complete the task without you explaining it?
  • What privacy, bias, consent or authenticity risk needs a human decision?
DO THISRun one real test, record what failed and improve the highest-value weakness.
07
FIELD OUTCOME

Prepare the summit story

A clear project presentation focused on value and learning, not just tools.

  • What was the problem and who did it affect?
  • What did you build and why did you choose this approach?
  • What can you demonstrate, what did you learn and what would you do next?
DO THISPractise a short story: Problem → Approach → Demonstration → Learning → Next step.

Scope lab

Minimum. Dream. Practical.

Use all three versions. The Dream gives direction, Minimum protects momentum, and Practical becomes the project you finish well.

MINIMUM

Prove the idea.

The smallest useful demonstration. One audience, one outcome, one working path.

Ask: What can I make today?
DREAM

See the possibility.

The inspiring version without present limits. Use it to clarify what matters, not to inflate your workload.

Ask: What could this become?
PRACTICAL

Choose the climb.

A credible, testable version you can complete with the time, tools and inputs available.

Ask: What can I finish well?

Expedition checklist

Eight markers to the summit.

0 of 8 project milestones complete.

Summit story

Show the value. Share the learning.

Your presentation does not need to hide the messy parts. A clear problem, a useful demonstration and honest learning are more valuable than a long tour of every tool.

Submit your project
  1. 01
    The problem

Who were you helping, and what mattered?

  2. 02
    The approach

What did you choose to build, and why?

  3. 03
    The demonstration

Show the shortest path to the useful outcome.

  4. 04
    The learning

What worked, failed, surprised you or needed human judgement?

  5. 05
    The next step

What would you improve, test or expand next?
